Darwin is a new town with suburbs 20 km around. There are 2 beautiful parks, East Point and Night Cliffs, with cycling lanes in the forest or along the sea, beautiful coloured cliffs, and views of the blue sea and white beaches. The water have a very special blue colour. When the tide is high, there are no more beach. There is too a park near the center, Mindil beach, with a lookout of downtown. It seems possile to camp here.
I stay 2 days in Darwin, in Chris home (CS), a funny and nice guy, who lodges a lot of CS. And my main office was to obtain the delivery of an extension of the visa. It takes me 2 days, and it costs me 260$, more 90 for the translation of the bank paperwork. I had to prove my incomes are enough to travel in Australia, and to show my fly ticket back to France. I suppose a woman teller of the migration office likes the idea to cycle in Australia, as she defends well my case among the other tellers.
I meet an Italian Cyclist, coming by bike from Italy, and we share tips about Australia and Indonesia. So now I know Indonesia is safe and easy to travel, it is possible to sleep in restaurants, and has beautiful backroads. He tells me he is camping in Mindil beach.
I buy too a laptop 10, as internet access is too expensive and complicated in Australia.
Darwin – Palmerston – Manton dam 73 km
On Saturday morning I move, way south. I take the cyclist lane till Palmerston, along the Stuart hwy. There I lunch, talking with a drunk man. I continue by the Stuart hgw till Manton dam, passing the cross to go to Shiffefield park, it is too hot for that detour.
I camp in Manton dam picnic area, just a free space with a table, no water but a creek with stream, where I feed the bottles and swim a little. The entrance of the dam is a few km ahead, but it is closed in night, it is not a place to camp.
There is a road house in Noonamah (50 km), and just after there is a small picnic area, just a table, for an historic place. There is too a restaurant in Acacia (70 km). The hwy is through the open forest, but here the soil is red, the grass is orange, and the trees are not the same. that is because the soil is full of iron. the iron is the last mineral taking off by the rain water, because it is too heavy.
Manton dam – Bachelor – Adelaide river 105 km
It is the same open forest, and the same gentle hilly road. There are a free campsite just after the cross to Bachelor, and an other 33 km after Adelaide river with water tank, where I camp. I take a free shower in Adelaide river village, just in the small park in the entrance, before the petrol station.
Well I turn right and go till Bachelor, make some shopping at the double price store. The teller of the shop tells me it is no way to take the 4*4 road because I cant cross the river. And it is very hilly. And it is so hot. So suddenly I decide to go back to the main road, just to run away from the heat.
River Adelaide – Hayes creek – Emerald Spring – Pine creek 80km
I continue the Stuart hwy. I have headwind today. It is the same open forest, and the same gentle hilly road. But it is slowly climbing, and I see some little table ranges.
Hayes creek is just a road house and a caravan park. Emerald Spring is a restaurant and a caravan park, no free water! But everywhere along the road there is plenty room to camp. Just choose a clean place, where the grass is already burnt, or absent, to avoid being catch by a bush fire. Pine creek is a small town with a store, a library with internet and caravan parks. The petrol station too have a store, it is on right on the way to Catherine, after downtown, follow the sign. I meet there a german cyclist woman, but she don’t really want to talk. I camp at the entrance of the town, at the truck bay.
Pine Creek – Edith River 50 km
I am tired so I decide to do a short day. I see the beautiful red dawn. Then I come back downtown to buy milk and take breakfast. I cross the same open forest, and the same gentle hills. Headwind start at 10h. I meet an Aussie cyclist and we have a good talk.
On the map, on Edith river there is a picnic area, but in fact there is nothing. But there is a path on right, just after the bridge, which drives to the river. It is perfect, already the fire cleans the place, the river is plenty of fresh warter and no crocodiles, so I camp there and swim all afternoon.
Edith river – Katherine – Catacut caves – King river 95 km
I awake early and move at 7h30, so I join Katherine, 40 km, in the fresh and avoid the wind. Katherine is a town with all the services, dedicated to tourism. I make the shopping for 8 days food, and run away.
1 kg pasta, 500 g parmesan, 1kg powder milk, 1 kg muesli, 7 sardines can, 5 beans cans, 500g nuts, 500g dates, 750 g honey, 10 tea bags, false sugar, 2 family biscuits boxes, hankershief paper box. And I bring 5 bottles of water, I drink in fact 10 liters a day!
Cacacut caves are aborigenous paintings, there is a beautiful picnic area but it is closed at night, King river is a small river. I stop and camp 5 km ahead, at the free campsite.
