Picnic area – Alice Spring 40Tennant Creek – picnic area 90
The road is nearly flat. Half is the shrubs land, and half is forest of trees, acacias or eucalyptus, rather dense. I have light wind from the East. I start at 7 am, and I arrive at 1 pm at the picnic area, rather tired. I eat and put the hammock on , and sleep 2 hours. A caravan driver offers me a beer.
Picnic area – Wauchope – Wycliffe – picnic area 97
I start slowly at 8 am. I go to visit Marble Devil, which is groups of big red granit boulders, upon the soil, in the yellow grass. In fact it was a little hill, then the water pushed off the soil and let the granit appears. Then the water cuts in cubes the hill, and then it changes them like big balls, one upon other. Then it cuts the balls in 2 parts, sometime, and slowly changes them sand.
Then I continue till Wauchope, a road house, and I notice suddenly I have backwind. Just at the nivel of Wauchope I have a problem with my front panniers sustain, and I repair it in the picnic area, which has watertank, in the shade. I continue till Wycliffe, a roadhouse with a basic store, where I ask for milk. They don’t have, and I notice the owner is rude. I have yet back wind, so I continue till the next picnic area. There again I rest in the hammock. All the way the road is nearly flat with shrubs land.
A caravan driver offers me a beer.
Picnic area – Barrow creek – Stirling Wallora – picnic area 110
It is the same barely hilly road, through shrubs land, or open forest of acacias or eucalyptus. In Barrow creek there is the old telegraph station, a big house in stone in good shape, worth a visit, and a roadhouse. The owner pretends the water there is not drinkibale, he wants just sale me water bottles. Well I ask to caravan driver water, and move away.
There is a small range with cones and table cliff. Stirling Wallory is an indigenous village. I continue till the picnic area, where a caravan driver gives 2 beers, the dinner, and a porto, very good.
Picnic area – Ti Tree – picnic area 70
It is the same road and the same country side. I have head wind again. Ti Tree is a little village, with a big sport field at the entrance, a store on right, and a road house with a nice owner. In the picnic area I talk 3 times with tourists.
Picnic area – Aileron – picnic area 55
It is the same gentle hilly road through shrubs land or acacia open forest, I have strong headwind, and I see a lot of bush fires. The sky becomes all grey by the smoke.
In Aileron roadhouse, there is no water tap outside. And I am not sure the water from the tap near the laundry is drinkable, well it is yellow. 15 km after Aileron there is a Memorial cairn, which could make a place to camp, but without water or facilities. It is a ruin of a stone weel. Water was got out by buffalos walking.
And beware, don’t go with the bicycle in the grass, it is full of spins!!
In the picnic area I meet a cyclist from Melbourne, Paul, click to show email
Picnic area – Capricorn picnic area 65
Well it is the same nearly flat road through the acacia open forest, and I have light headwind in the morning. I stop at midday, 35 km before Alice Spring, to rest. I see an eagle in a tree, an one other flies just upon me.
I want to arrive early in Alice Spring tomorrow, to have time to do my shopping and all, and stay only one night, as I will have to go to a backpacker. The city is not safe at all, it is full of black people drunk, it is not a good idea to let the bicycle and the stuff outside or in a caravan park.
Capricorn picnic area – Alice Spring 40
It is the same acacia open forest till the hills, then it is the shrubs land. The road enters in the mac donnell range, cross the high point of the explore way, and follows hilly till Alice Spring.
Alice Spring is a touristic new small town. I go to Annie backpackers lodge, and stay 2 days to rest, at least.
