Australia 38 around the Blackwood river

around the Blackwood river

Shannon - Northcliffe - Pemberton 83

I continue first on the hgw 1 and then I turn on left in Moore road, gravel. I connect on right in Boorara road. There are soft hills by forest and farms land, till Northcliffe. In boorara tree, 1 km off the road, there is a nice picnic area, roof, toilet, table, but no water, and there is a very high tree. It was used as a fire tower, it had a shelter at the top, built by locals. And they stayed here, looking at all te countryside around, surveying the bush fires.
I go back in Boorara road, and follow it till Northcliffe. On the way I don't find the picnic area which should be 9 km after Boorara tree.
Northcliffe is a small town, library, store, and sport ground on Middleton road. I take a lunch and feed the bottles.
I take the hgw, North, and connect with Wheatley road, which I follow for 10 km. I turn on left in Orchid road, and 2 km after on right in River road. This one is a narrow one way trail, funny, smooth. It goes by the forest till the river, and the bridge is only for bicycles and pedestrians. I cross it, and I take the road climbing in front. After a short pushing, I continue till the end of this road, by soft easy hills.
Then I take Gully Spring road, by the forest, and it starts to be steep hills, for 12 km, till Pemberton. But I decide to camp before Pemberton, in Cascade picnic area. so I do a lot of detours, by Gloucester and Poer roads, I cross diggings and railway and trees which close these roads, and I arrive finally in Pemberton. I never found Cascade picnic area, must be at the top of the hill, by the pedestrian track.
In Pemberton I go straight to the sport ground where I camp, tired. Pemberton is a little town with all services.

Pemberton - Warren – Manijmup 65

I take the Vasse hgw, and then turn on left in Old Vasse road, and on left again in Warren Heartbreak trail. This trail goes by the forest, with very high trees. But it is very steep, up and down, and very slippery, by the peas looklike gravel layer, and I do nearly all the trail pushing the bicycle, or retaining it. It takes me about 2 hours.
I join again Old Vasse road, and then Vasse hgw, and I turn on right in Channybearup road, sealed, but with long steep hills. Well I can cycle all, this time. All that is mostly by the forest, some part wild, some part planted, with a few farms with fields.
I join the hgw 1 and I go to David and Camela home, warmshowers hosts. On Sunday David makes a cycle tour with other local cyclists, and I go with them. Well it is a little too long for me, 80 km, and a bit lonely. I don't understand when they speak together, and none really takes care about me. It is very more interesting to gossip about every day happening, than with a fool cycling the country. But I see nice country side, and we take fresh beer in one home, so it makes a nice day.

Manijmup - Glenoram refuge 20

As I am yet tired, I decide to make a very short day. I take the Munda Biddi trail, which starts very near David home. It goes by the forest, very nice and rather easy, using narrow smooth trails, undulating. And I arrive slowly at the refuge, with beautiful view on the hills overed with forest, warter, tables, balcony, where I stay and relax in the hammock.

Glenoram refuge - Donelly river - Jarrah Park 60

I continue to follow the Munda Biddi trail but it gets off narrow roads, and becomes just a path in the forest, zigzaguing and undulating, making thousands detours to visit each tree. That is very slow and tiring, a lot of effort for a short progress. It could be funny with a empty bicycle for a weekend, but it is boring with a loaded bicycle in a long trip.
So I get off when I join Gregory road, which I take on left, and I get in again just at Brook road cross, on left, to go to Donelly village. Here in the school there is a basic refuge to sleep, and some kangurus and emus stroll around the school, used to stay and be feeded by humans. there is a small store too.
I try to continue by back roads, but I get lost 2 times, so I come back to the village and follow again the Munda Biddi trail. It continues the same zigzags. I get off in Stalliard road, which I follow till Willow Spring picnic area and camping, just a table in fact. And then I take Austin road on right to join the main road. I take this one on right, till I cross the Bibbulum trail. I take on left and I follow it till the refuge. All that is by the forest, a bit hilly, easy. Bibbulum rail is very narrow, between weeds 2 m high, zigzaging too, so straigh it should be 3 km, and in fact it becomes 10 km. Well I have yellow rainwater, drinkable when boiled, and I meet a guy doing the trail. We have a nice talk. But in the end I better should have stayed in the picnic area along the main road.

Jarrah park - Wrighis bridge - Nannup - Canelrake picnic area 85

I have the plan to follow the Blackwood river. So from the refuge, I take Camela road, then Petunia road on left, and I join Wetherley road, very hilly and steep, which I follow till the end. I connect with Creek road on right, with about 5 steep hills, and a very steep downhill at the end, and I connect the main sealed road. All that is by the forest, nothing spectacular, and hot day.
I turn on left and follow the blackwood river. It is hilly, by forest and farms land, till Nannup, with nothing exciting. The river is narrow, with very brown water, because of the tannin from the trees. I take lunch and find rain water in a chalets motel closed for works. I could very well avoid all this detour, from the refuge till nannup, and go straight to Nannup by the sealed road 252.
Nannup is a little town, where I get my computer. I lunch and move away, by the Brockman hgw 10. There is a very good sport ground by this road, but I make a mistake, I don't stop to camp here. So i continue, by a very hot afternoon, and by a hilly steep road, for 20 km, till Longbottom road, where it should have been a picnic area. But there is nothing, perhaps it is by the gravel road 3 km before, at the bus stop ? So I continue 15 km more, with headwind, till the cross with a road going to Pemberton, and 500 m after the cross, there is a nice picnic area, where I camp, tables, but no water. I have a nice talk with 2 young european guys.
Well The forest canopy along that road is beautiful and rich, with banksias, paperbark, brush, ooak, acacia, etc..
